Benefits and duties

We are looking for motivated student volunteers (SV) for the Design Research Society Conference 2014. As a SV, you are the face of the conference, assisting chairs, speakers, and attendees in making the conference a success. Your duties include setting up the conference infrastructure, manning the registration desk, assisting speakers, helping conference attendees, technical assistance and cleaning up after the conference.

In return you can attend the conference when you are off-duty, get lunches, conference T-shirts and most importantly, a chance to meet and network with established members in the community as well as your student peers.


Arriving and leaving

As a SV you pay for your own travel to and from the conference, housing, parking, lunches and visas if you are travelling internationally.

You need to arrive at Umea Institute of Design by 15:00h on June 14, 2014 and stay at least until 17:00h on June 19, 2014.

All volunteers are expected to attend a mandatory orientation on the 14th of June  at the Umea Institute of Design at 15:00h local time. During this orientation you will be given the tour of the venue, be assigned your responsibilities and can pick up your volunteer T shirts.

For international travel and visa information:

Visa support letters can be made available upon request to the student volunteers. Please create a cover letter and provide the following details: first name, last name, date of birth, affiliation, nationality, passport number, passport expiry date, address, e-mail and phone number.

Please check your local consulate for visa application forms and about processing time as well as any other requirements to travel to Sweden.


Application instructions

To apply, you must be an undergraduate, Master, or Ph.D. student at the time of the conference. You will commit to work approximately 20 hours before, during, and after the conference.The selection of the SVs is based on previous experience with volunteering, amount of time they can dedicate to the event and their willingness to take on multiple roles and tasks.

Terms of volunteering

1. You must notify the student volunteer coordinator as soon as possible if you are no longer able to volunteer or any conflicts arise that require modification of your volunteer assignments. 

2. We will honor, but cannot guarantee, that you will be assigned to one of your preferred tasks. You will be notified of tentative assignments of tasks and time slots two to four weeks before the start of the conference. The organisers reserve the right to change your tasks if the need arises.

3. Once all available student volunteer positions are filled, you may be invited as an alternate. Alternate volunteers will be informed whether we need their assistance or not in due course.

4. Please carry your student IDs with you when attending the mandatory orientation on the 14th of June.

5. Please make sure you have the appropriate health and travel insurance coverage from your home country. You will be required to sign a liability waiver form if you are selected as a student volunteer.
